A few outcomes of prayer
A few outcomes of prayer
To be honest with ourselves
is prayerful and can be a prayer at any time we do.
When we pray, we can be more
empathic for others.
Prayer helps us develop the
reverent attitude toward the whole creation of God
(from I-it relationship to
I-Thou relationship)
To make a difference.
Elements of prayer
Crucial elements:
Breaking our hearts with
truth
Addressing the indifference
of reality
And sharing with intimate knowledge
of the lives of people
Emotions:
Being attentive to our
thoughts, feelings, desires, fears, drives, worries, delights
Prayer seen as ‘reaching’:
Reaching in to identify our
needs and reaching beyond to what we can do to try to meet them.
Reaching out to other’s
strengths to ask for help and to other’s wisdom to ask for guidance and to God
Who is God? Or What is God? –
to answer is a honest and sincere life long task to quest
The cautions I make:
Praying for the grace of God
which allows us a repeated sense of security and certainty
Prayer which just comforts us
and blinds us
Prayer which simply gives us
an excuse from trying crucial ways to make the situation better or to restore
the broken relationships.
What may this quote mean?
(Oscar Wilde’s)
“Prayer must never be
answered. If it is, it ceases to be prayer and becomes correspondence.”
Language of prayer
A language of reverence for
life (for self, for others, for nature.)
A language of wonder, awe, appreciation
and gratitude
A language of
self-reflection, honesty, and commitment to growth
A language of care and
concern for others (those we know and those we will never know but who are
affected by our way of life, lifestyles)
